4 tablespoons unsalted butter
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
4 to 5 ripe plums, thinly sliced
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
3/4 cup granulated sugar
2 large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup buttermilk
Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease a 9-inch round cake pan.
Melt butter and stir in brown sugar. Pour into pan and arrange plum slices on top.
Whisk flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Cream butter and sugar until fluffy. Add eggs and vanilla.
Alternate adding dry ingredients and buttermilk to the butter mixture. Mix until combined.
Pour batter over plums and smooth top. Bake 35–40 minutes, until a toothpick comes out clean.
Cool 5 minutes, loosen edges, and invert onto a platter. Let cool before serving.
