Tamarillo is a fruit which is also known as "tree tomato" and, when ripe, have a sweet-tart profile that pairs well with apples.
Ingredients
-
1/2 cup flour
-
1/4 cup whole wheat flour
-
1/4 cup oats
-
1/2 cup brown sugar
-
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
-
3 ounces butter
-
2 tablespoons sunflower seeds
-
5 medium apples, peeled and sliced
-
4 Tamarillos, peeled and sliced (see notes below)
Directions
Adjust oven rack to middle of oven and preheat to 350ºF.
In a large bowl, combine the two flours, oats, sugar and cinnamon.
Rub in the butter until the mixture resembles fine crumbs. Add the sunflower seeds, stir and mix.
Grease a large shallow baking dish. Layer the fruit in the base. Sprinkle with 1 tablespoon of extra sugar if desired. Cover with the crumble mixture. Bake in a 350°F oven for 40-50 minutes or until golden.
Recipe Note
Peeling tamarillo:
Fill a big cooking pot with water and bring to a boil. Drop the tamarillos in the boiling water and boil for 30 seconds. Remove from boiling water and drop in ice water for about a minute to stop cooking. The skin should now peel easily.
Forget about calories and top with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream or sweetened whipped cream!
