I LOVE camping! Sleeping in a tent, sunrise coffee, walking under a canopy of stars, briskly cold lake or river swimming on a hot day, and of course—if it’s not summer in California—sitting by the campfire at night.

Eating lots of really good produce and making that the delicious primary source of my calories is my diet tactic during this month of resolutions when so many of us try to change our relationship with food.

We see them all year long in our favorite grocery stores in all shapes, packages and sizes. Most suffice when needed for a basic recipe, but despite the excellent appearance of some new breeds and the advanced storing and growing techniques, most taste just ok.

While merchandising in the produce department one Friday, I watched a customer pick out an organic pineapple. He would flick it with his index finger to check for ripeness as he picked up each one.

This year it was organic tomatoes for me. I tried them in June… good color but not the flavor I wanted. I dabbled and sampled throughout July…
