Oh, Pear!
By Mark Mulcahy
The other day, I opened a box of Bartlett pears, and a waft of perfectly ripe pear perfume filled the air. The sweet, floral aroma stopped me in my tracks. Naturally, I leaned in for another deep breath.
Wow! What a day changer.
I couldn't help but invite everyone nearby to share the experience. "Oh, my goodness, that's amazing!" and "How wonderful!" were just a few of the delighted responses, each accompanied by a smile.
It was exactly what we needed, a simple reminder to slow down and appreciate the little joys that surround us every day. Sometimes all it takes is opening our senses to discover something extraordinary hiding in plain sight. So today, I encourage you to open your nose and see what wonderful aromas are waiting to brighten your day. Who knows what delight awaits?
Speaking of pears, did you know there are more than 5,000 varieties growing around the world? How many have you tried? The Bartlett pear remains America's favorite and continues to be the most widely planted variety. Following closely behind are D'Anjou and Bosc pears. Here in the United States, most pears are grown in Washington, Oregon, and Northern California. Worldwide, China is the leading producer of pears, with Argentina ranking among the top pear-producing countries.
Wondering if your pears are ripe? Summer pears like Bartletts provide a helpful clue by changing color as they ripen, but winter varieties such as Bosc and D'Anjou show very little color change. The best way to tell is to gently press near the stem with your thumb. If the flesh yields slightly, it's ready to enjoy.
Why aren't pears picked ripe? Unlike many fruits, pears are harvested when they are mature but still firm because they ripen much better off the tree. As they sit at room temperature, they naturally produce ethylene gas, allowing them to ripen beautifully in about three to seven days. Once ripe, simply refrigerate them to slow further ripening while preserving their wonderful flavor.
If you're looking for the perfect gym companion, pears are an excellent choice. Naturally rich in potassium and a good source of vitamin C and fiber, they're a smart snack before or after a workout. Potassium helps replace what is lost through perspiration and supports healthy muscle function and a normal heartbeat. Vitamin C promotes tissue repair and healing, while fiber supports heart health and healthy digestion. Perhaps that's the magic of pears. They invite us to use all our senses, from their intoxicating fragrance and buttery texture to their sweet, juicy flavor. They remind us to slow down, savor the moment, and appreciate the simple pleasures that nature provides.
On a beautiful fall day, don't be surprised if you find yourself smiling and saying, "Oh, pear!"
