Who Makes Your Organic Produce Possible?

By Mark Mulcahy

Do you have a favorite place to shop for organic produce?

You know the kind of place I'm talking about. The displays make you stop, take a deep breath, and smile the moment you enter the department. The organic fruits and vegetables are beautifully displayed, carefully rotated, and always look fresh. The produce clerks greet you with a smile, know their products, or are curious enough to find the answer if you ask a question.

If you're smiling and nodding your head "yes," then consider yourself fortunate. More importantly, take a moment to appreciate the people who make that experience possible. It starts with talented produce managers who lead by example. They train their teams, create beautiful displays, monitor quality, and genuinely care about the products they offer. They celebrate each changing season because every harvest brings new flavors, colors, textures, and aromas to share with their customers.

Behind every display are hardworking organic farmers. Local growers carefully plant, nurture, harvest, and pack their crops so you can enjoy the freshest produce possible. Larger organic growers do the very same thing while also managing the challenges of shipping delicate fruits and vegetables across the country without sacrificing quality.

Then there are the distributors. Their work often goes unnoticed, yet it keeps grocery stores supplied with the organic produce many of us simply expect to find every time we shop. The logistics are incredible. Buying, receiving, inspecting, storing, selling, and delivering fresh produce on time takes remarkable planning, teamwork, and dedication every single day.

When you stop and think about it, there are countless people working behind the scenes so we can enjoy that perfectly ripe pear, crisp apple, sweet mango, or colorful bunch of carrots.

I know how grateful I am. Because of their dedication, I get to experience the simple pleasures that fresh organic produce brings. I smile when I see my favorite seasonal items arrive in the produce department. I savor that first bite of a perfectly ripe Organic Keitt Mango, a crisp new-crop apple or pear, or the final sweet ears of summer corn alongside tender green beans and vine-ripened tomatoes. Those moments don't happen by accident. They happen because people care.

That got me thinking... I believe we should have a national "Thank Your Organic Produce Professionals Month." Produce managers. Clerks. Farmers. Packers. Distributors. Everyone who helps bring fresh organic produce from the field to our tables.

Why not October? It seems like the perfect month to celebrate the abundance of the harvest and the people who make it possible.

All in favor? I thought so. The motion passes unanimously! So, the next time you're shopping, surprise someone in the produce department with two simple words:

"Thank you".

Those words may take only a moment to say, but they'll mean more than you know.
