NEW!!! COLADA ROYALE PINEAPPLE
Take a staycation trip to the tropics with Melissa’s newest addition to our pineapple line, Colada Royale Pineapple.   A non-GMO pineapple with hints of coconut, and a small edible core equating to less waste and more yum!

Did you know pineapple, a member of the bromeliad family, contains enzymes helpful for digestion?  Just be certain to cook the pineapple before inclusion in gelatin salads or as a garnish on meats.  The bromelain will prevent gelling and will soften the meat protein.

Select pineapples with no soft or dark spots, no mold at the base.  Pineapple will not ripen further once harvested but will soften and become more fragrant if left out 1-2 days.  Refrigerate, uncut, up to two days, and consume or freeze within 5 days.   Available year-round. Product of Honduras

Image of Seville Oranges

SEVILLE ORANGES
This ‘sour’ orange is meant for more than marmalade!  The peel’s essential oils add wonderful zing to baked goods, marinades, and sauces, especially for chicken and seafood.  The cuisine of Latin American countries considers this an essential ingredient, so purchase Seville Oranges when in season, then freeze the juice and peel in recipe quantities for year-round inclusion.  If you are a ‘canner’ and put up jams throughout the year, save the seeds for making scratch pectin- wrap a large quantity of rinsed seeds in cheesecloth or a jelly bag and set in clean water overnight to release the pectin.  Squeeze the goopy pectin from the cloth or bag and use it in the same quantity as called for in your recipe.  Good work never goes unrewarded!  Available through February.  Product of USA, California-grown.

KISHU MANDARINS
Darling little orbs of sunshine, your little darlings will fall hard for this seedless Japanese citrus with easy ‘zipper’ peel.  Kishu’s are about the size of a quarter, making them easy for children of all ages to peel as a snack for school or between sports practice.  And, if you surprisingly have any left over, include them in fresh fruit or green salads, with Asian dishes, meats, or tofu.   Available now through February. Product of USA, California-grown.

Image of KIWIFRUIT

KIWIFRUIT
With a cute nickname ‘Kiwi’, who can resist this nutritious piece of fruit?  A source of digestive enzymes, loaded with antioxidants, Omega-3, fiber, and other nutrients, kiwifruit, whether green flesh or yellow, is one of the topmost nutrient-dense fruits available today**. Originating from China and known as Chinese Gooseberry decades ago, it later became known as ‘kiwifruit’, endearingly named for its commercial growing region of Australia, and later, the US.

Kiwifruit skin, though fuzzy, is edible. The green variety tends to have a thicker skin than the gold variety, and both should be washed before consumption.  Because of its natural digestive enzymes, gelatins will not set, and animal proteins will turn mealy if raw kiwifruit is used, the same as raw pineapple and papaya.   Available year-round (green); May-October(gold). Product of New Zealand and USA.

Image of TASMANIAN CHERRIES

TASMANIAN CHERRIES
Now that we are discussing fruit from Down Under, it’s cherry season in Tasmania, an island in Australia, and the 26th largest in the world!  Tasmanian cherries are known to be some of the sweetest in the world due to the area’s terroir- the environmental growing conditions of soil, weather, and growing practices that affect the quality and characteristics of a crop.  Get them while you can enjoy out of hand, making relish, stewing, in addition to steamed veggies, grains, morning cereals, and salads.  Taz’ are fab with chicken or pork, and decadent as a dessert with vanilla bean ice cream and a drizzle of one of Melissa’s chocolate dessert sauces.  Available through February.  Product of Tasmania.

Image of MUSCATOS™ GRAPES

MUSCATOS™ GRAPES
Grapes are the fruits most kids like.  They’re easy to pluck from a twisty vine, they’re sweet, and require very little preparation to snack.  But there is so much more that Melissa’s sweet and plump Muscatos™ seedless grapes can do to be a healthy inclusion in your diet.  Add them, halved or quartered, to seasoned warm rice or other cooked grain, go classic and serve whole or on the vine for grazing and noshing with fresh fruit and roasted nuts, roast them with chicken, or chop them for a sweet/savory salsa.  Doubtful you will be tired of eating grapes, but if you do, toss them into a butter cake or half and add to quesadillas.  Available from February to April. Product of Peru.

EZ-OPEN SWEET YOUNG COCONUT (CONVENTIONAL & ORGANIC)
Loaded with electrolytes, antioxidants, magnesium, and potassium, fresh coconut water is an excellent way to hydrate and feel refreshed.  If you prefer to cook with it, substitute water with coconut water 1:1 for cooking grains or adding to dry beverage mixes.  In usual Melissa’s fashion, we’ve made accessing refreshingly sweet young coconut water EZ!  Whether you prefer USDA Certified Organic or conventionally grown, every young coconut is sold with a push tab that punctures the coconut, accessing the coconut water.   Be certain to select young coconuts that are displayed under refrigeration or on ice and remember to store them in the refrigerator.   Available year-round.  Both are products of Thailand.

Image of Pears

PEARS
Winter is the season for pears, from crunchy and refreshing Butterscotch™ Pears to toothsome Comice and luscious Red Starkrimson.  A source of fiber, natural sugar, and vitamins A and C, pears may be consumed raw, roasted, poached, grilled, or dehydrated, and complement produce as well as proteins, grains, and dairy.  They are a welcome addition to grazing boards, quesadillas, butter cakes, and crostatas. Generally available through March.  Product of USA.
