The variety, developed and grown year-round in the nutrient-rich, volcanic soils of Ghana, is much taller and slimmer in shape with less acidity compared to the standard Hawaiian pineapple. The variety is named for the fruit’s dark green, gold-tinged skin. The bright white interior fruit has a creamier, less fibrous, texture than yellow varieties with a subtle sweet flavor and no acidity.
Pineapples are a member of the bromeliad family of plants and contain bromelain, an enzyme found in the fruit’s stem and juice that is used commercially as a meat tenderizer. Similar to the properties of pepsin found in a papaya, consumption of pineapple is believed to be good for digestion.
