A unique hybrid of Ichang papeda (a primitive citrus) and a sour mandarin orange creates the wonderful Yuzu Fruit. Originating in China, the Yuzu is most recognized for its wide cultivation in Japan.
Giving zest a new meaning, the rare golf ball size Yuzu fruit propels a fascinating fragrance. Yuzu enhances juices, soy sauces, miso toppings, ponzu sauces and vinegars with its zest.
Yuzu’s less sharp and more subtle flavor than lemon, allows its fruitiness to enhance great flavors. The slightest cut to Yuzu green-yellow rind allows the most distinct complex aroma of lime, lemon and grapefruit. Pleasant aromatic zest from fresh Yuzu is the rage at high-end restaurants, for cocktails, savory dishes and sweets.
When selecting Melissa’s Yuzu choose fairly firm fragrant fruit. Store Yuzu at room temperature for a week or two and for longer storage in the fridge or freezer.
Yuzu cannot be imported into the United States, but is currently grown in California.
Note: Early season Yuzu will be green. As the season progresses, the color will change to yellow.
