Red Kiwis might resemble their gold and green cousins at first glance, but their skins are decidedly smoother, both less fuzzy and more delicate. Inside, the flesh is soft and ranges from golden-yellow to bright green, dotted with tiny edible black seeds. The center of their flesh is what gives them their name, boasting a red to crimson sunburst, also called a red iris. That striking cross-section makes Red Kiwis a natural standout on grazing boards and in fruit salads, where they add both visual drama and a creamy sweetness to the dish.
Red Kiwis have a high sugar content and lack the tangy, sour quality associated with other varieties of kiwifruit. They have candy-like sweetness, which has sweet berry and tropical notes, and makes them one of the mildest, sweetest kiwi varieties available.
Red kiwis get their vivid color from anthocyanins, natural pigments also found in blueberries and red cabbage. Kiwis of all varieties are a good source of vitamin C, an antioxidant nutrient.
Red Kiwis are ideal for fresh preparations. Cut in half and scoop flesh with a spoon, or peel and slice into salads, fruit platters, or grain bowls. Because of their decorative flair, Red Kiwis are an
eye-catching topping for chia puddings and yogurt bowls, or blended into smoothies.
Storage:
Delicate skins and softer flesh require Red Kiwis to be handled with extra care. Ripen firm fruit at room temperature. Once soft, refrigerate until ready to eat.
