How to: Roast Peppers at Home
Method #1 – Air Fryer
Total time: 40 minutes
● Preheat air fryer and prep: 5 minutes
● Cook: 15 minutes (maximum)
● Rest: 15 minutes
● Peel: 5 minutes
Steps:
1. Preheat air fryer to 400°F degrees.
2. Meanwhile, wash and dry your peppers.
3. Lightly coat chiles in cooking oil of your choice. (We like avocado, or EVOO.)
4. Air fry at 400°F for 12 minutes, flipping peppers halfway through. Expect the skin on the top side to look slightly wrinkled or lightly browned. This step can take up to 15 minutes to get the desired char.
5. When finished cooking, the skins should be largely bubbled and blackened in spots.
6. Transfer chiles to a bowl and cover with plastic wrap to steam for about 15 minutes.
7. Peel off skins, and remove stems and seeds if not using. You're ready to cook, or store your peppers.
Tip: Make sure the chiles are completely dry after washing them and before adding the oil. Any leftover water will create steam in the air fryer basket, which prevents the skin from blistering properly.
Method #2 – Broiler
Total time: 35-40 minutes
● Preheat broiler and prep: 5 minutes
● Cook: 10-15 minutes
● Rest: 15 minutes
● Peel: 5 minutes
Steps:
1. Set your oven rack to the highest position.
2. Preheat oven broiler to high.
3. Meanwhile, wash and dry your peppers.
4. Cut peppers in half, and remove stems, seeds, and any membranes.
5. Arrange cut peppers cut-side down/skin-side up on a rimmed baking sheet lined with foil or parchment paper.
6. Broil for 10 to 15 minutes, watching closely. Use tongs to rotate the pan or turn pieces if they char unevenly.
7. When finished cooking, the skins should be blackened and blistered.
8. Transfer chiles to a bowl and cover with plastic wrap to steam for about 15 minutes. They can also be placed in a paper or plastic bag.
9. Peel off skins. You're ready to cook, or store your peppers.
