Cinco De Mama

May is famous for two holidays, Mother’s Day and Cinco de Mayo. Being only 3 days apart, why not combine them and have a Cinco de Mama celebration? After all, isn’t it commonly known that a mother’s multitasking abilities make it seem like she is often doing the work of five people? Here are five ways to have fun with Mom on Mother’s Day. May is also a great time for amazing Melissa’s organic, CA grown; Hass Avocados and these can offer fun, healthy ways to celebrate with Mom.

Why California Hass?

To make sure they taste good, California grown Hass must contain a minimum of 8% oil to be sold—it’s the law. Avocado oil is good for us. It has beneficial monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats—both essential to a heart healthy diet. Monounsaturated fats are the kind found in olive oil. The body burns them more easily than saturated fat and they help counter the effects of saturated fat. The polyunsaturated fats contain valuable Omega fatty acids 3 and 6. They also have a small amount of saturated fat but it’s cholesterol-free. Avocados are high in fiber and enzymes, which facilitate the breakdown of fats. Because they’re so rich in vitamin A, folic acid, potassium, iron and protein they are the perfect way to start the day.

One of my favorite breakfasts is Huevos Rancheros. While there are many versions, I go for seven simple ingredients when making mine. Warmed organic corn tortillas, sautéed organic yellow onions, shredded sharp cheddar, heated organic refried black beans, fried over easy eggs, sliced organic Hass avocado, and organic fresh salsa.

During the day serve Mom some refreshing homemade organic lemon or limeade and instead of taking Mom to the spa make her a lovely avocado mask. It’s easy to make, feels wonderful on the skin, and is really good for her too! Mash up one ripe avocado with a fork and stir in 1 tablespoon of honey until it has nice creamy texture. Now sit her in her favorite chair and gently apply it to Mom’s face (careful around the eyes). Leave it on for 15- 20 minutes. When the timer goes off have her wash off the mixture with lukewarm water and pat her face dry with a soft towel right out of the dryer.

Of course it wouldn’t be Cinco de Mama without fresh guacamole made with some Melissa’s organic avocados, fresh cilantro, chopped spring onions, and a squeeze of lemon or lime. If your Mom is adventurous, shake things up and have her join you in a very fun way to mix things up. Get your favorite recipe, put all of the ingredients in a very large bowl and then both of you can dive in with your hands (thoroughly washed) and start squishing and squeezing to your hearts content. I guarantee the house will be filled howls of laughter during and after the prep.

When making your dinner plans why not plan it around the grill and make a grilled organic veggie salad? Thinly slice some of Melissa’s Red and Yellow organic potatoes brushed with olive oil and sprinkled with chopped fresh rosemary or basil. Take them off when they are firm yet pliable.

Next, add the fruit of the day to the grill. This method brings out the avocados rich flavor and can make any taco, sandwich or salad just that much better.

→ Cut avocado in half, seed, peel, and slice.

→ Drizzle with fresh lime or lemon juice and brush lightly with olive oil.

→ Gently place slices on grill over hot coals for 2 minutes on each side.

→ Season with salt to taste.

Add the grilled veggies and avocados to some chopped romaine, sliced tomatoes, crumbled goat cheese, tossed in a light vinaigrette and you’ll find that Mama isn’t the only one who feels special that day.
