Originally cultivated in the Andes where they are still grown today and wild-harvested at 7,500-10,000 feet. They were taken to Florida/Louisiana in the 1700's and then transported by Cajuns to Quebec where they are still cultivated as an annual crop. They are a member of the Solanacaea family, as are the tomatillo and tamarillo, which are close cousins.

These flavorful bite-sized fruits have a multitude of names such as Cape Gooseberries, Husk Tomatoes, Ground Cherries, Inca Berries, Aztec Berries, Peruvian Cherries and Poha. Enjoy out of hand as a quick snack or in desserts, jams, jellies, preserves, pie fillings (with or without strawberries), chutneys, sauces, purees, meat glazes, or garnishes for plates and beverages.

They are hand selected for excellent quality. Their shelf life is 7-14 days and consumers can enjoy them the day of purchase or they may be kept up to 5 days under refrigeration.
