Carob is loved for its naturally sweet, chocolaty flavor and many health benefits. It has no caffeine and is a good source of fiber and calcium.

If you want a unique chocolate substitute, look no further than carob. Carob is loved for its natural, roasted cocoa-like flavor and can help satisfy those sweet cravings. You may have seen carob bars, carob flour, carob chips and more at health food markets.

The outer pods of this fruit can be ground up and mixed with boiled water to make a sweet syrup or cocoa powder replacement. All you need is 1.5 parts of carob powder to 1 part cocoa powder. To substitute actual chocolate, measure 3 tablespoons of carob powder to 1 tablespoons of water per 1 ounce of a chocolate square.

However, carob is not only limited to chocolate substitution. You can roast the pods after grinding them down to substitute as coffee. The inner seeds are also known as locust bean gum, a natural thickening agent or gel additive for dressings, breads, ice creams, cream cheese and more. And because carob pods do not actually contain chocolate, you can even use them in homemade dog biscuits!

Carob is not only caffeine-free but also gluten-free and dairy-free. In addition, they happen to be low in sodium. The health benefits are endless as they are an excellent source of antioxidants, calcium, fiber and protein.
