Summer Time Organics

By Mark Mulcahy

Does it seem that you find yourself longing for the simple days of summers' past this year? When going out didn't involve putting on a mask, wiping things down, and keeping your distance in public places? Most of us do, and we all know that simpler times will return, and we will get through this together.

One thing that remains the same is Melissa's awesome summertime organic produce, which is perfect for snacking, side dishes or main courses, and the perfect distraction on a lazy summer day. After all, it is always healthy for you, low in calories, and bursting with flavor. Really, what's not to like?

Want to try something fun this week? Ask someone you run into at the store, or on a video call with, what their favorite summer produce snacking item is? Some will blurt it out as soon as the question leaves your mouth, while others ponder as if they are drifting back to their childhood.

Organic Watermelon

For instance, watermelon was a popular choice when I asked around last week, and eaten in many ways; sliced, cut into chunks, with a spoon, using it as a bowl, or served with a little lime juice and cayenne pepper. As one colleague put it, Melissa's organic watermelon is best served with a hammock and shady tree.

Organic Bell Pepper

Another client was quick to answer with fresh English peas, "I could eat a whole bowl of em'." or, "Fresh red bell peppers, they are soooooo sweet." Then, there were radishes with salt from a produce clerk, and a woman at the farm stand says she can eat cantaloupe all day long. My favorite, though, was a friend who knew right away that it was raspberries! It comes from summers at her grandparents and East coast roots; fresh-picked raspberries and heavy cream.

Organic Peaches

Though I have never tried it, I can see how that would be habit-forming. July and early August, organic peaches are my favorite fruit. Still, I think my favorite summer snacking produce item is organic Thompson seedless or Flame seedless grapes. So easy, so tasty, and so fun. If I had to choose a veggie, it would probably be sun gold cherry tomatoes. Both of these items start out firm and round and, with a gentle bite, burst their goodness into your mouth. Bunches and baskets of these get consumed in one sitting around my house.

Organic Tomatoes

A big, thick slice of a rich organic red tomato, or perhaps whole, eaten like an apple; warm and juicy, mmmm.

Organic Cucumbers

Locally grown cucumbers instead of crackers with a little fresh sour cream dip.
Organic Green Beans

A bag of Melissa's Organic Green Beans as a crispy afternoon appetizer.

Organic Corn

Steamed chard roll-ups stuffed with cilantro, hummus and fresh corn.

Organic Apricots

Fresh apricots with a little blue cheese and drizzled with honey.

Organic Plums

Plums in yogurt.

The list goes on and on.

What's your favorite? What's your best friend's favorite? How about your partner? Can you name theirs? It's fun to ask, and you may be surprised at the answer. Whatever it is, Melissa's will have the best and freshest, organic produce available for your snacking pleasure all month long. So, what are you waiting for?!
