Early Years
Nancy Zaslavsky is an award-winning graphic designer, photographer, and an avid cook and traveler. Her first love is Mexico and real Mexican food. She has traveled throughout Mexico since 1970 exploring the regional foods of this world-class cuisine.
After writing magazine and newspaper articles on Mexican food, Nancy lived in the southern half of Mexico while completing the final research on her first book, A Cook’s Tour of Mexico (St. Martin’s Press, New York, 1996), a 1996 James Beard Award nominee.
Meatless Mexican Home Cooking (St. Martin’s Press, New York, 1997) is Nancy’s stunning new collection of generously spiced, exuberantly flavored meatless recipes as they are prepared everyday, cocina tipica, by great Mexican cooks - the cuisine of the people. The recipes include Nancy’s personal favorites and old Mexican family treasures, focusing on ease of preparation and readily available ingredients. These are authentic preparations of flavorful, uncomplicated, unpretentious meatless regional foods that have been traditionally enjoyed throughout Mexico.
The recipes include classic meatless soups; authentic sauces and table salsas; snacks made of masa (corn dough); varieties of tamales; egg dishes; beans; rice, pastas and potatoes; salads and pickled vegetables; desserts; fruit drinks; and more. There is a strong emphasis on using less full-fat dairy products, and many recipes can easily be translated into low-fat or non-fat dishes. Meatless Mexican Home Cooking will provide meal after meal of heartwarming pleasure for family and friends
