Gary Rhodes

Chef, Restaurateur, Cookbook Author, TV Series Host

Early Years

Paving the way for fellow Brits like Jamie Oliver and Nigella Lawson, Gary Rhodes has been one of Britain's most popular celebrity chefs, with a professional culinary career spanning more than 15 years. Born in South London and brought up in Gillingham, Kent, Gary Rhodes began cooking at the age of 14 with a traditional lemon sponge prepared for his family. The success of his first creation encouraged young Gary to enter the catering program at Thanet Technical College, where he was honored as both Student and Chef of the Year. His first job was at the Amsterdam Hilton, followed by stints as Sous Chef at several London restaurants and clubs.

Recognition

Adding his own modern twist to classic British dishes, at the age of 26 Gary Rhodes received his first Michelin star at the Castle Hotel in Somerset. He repeated this feat in 1996 as head chef of the Greenhouse Restaurant in Mayfair, and at his own restaurant, City Rhodes, which has been booked to capacity since its opening in 1987. In 1998, he received another Michelin star for his second London restaurant, Rhodes in the Square. In a partnership with Sodexho, chef and restaurateur Rhodes opened two Rhodes & Co Brasseries in Manchester in 1999 (the home of his beloved Manchester United) and in Gatwick in 2001.

While opening and running Michelin star-awarded restaurants would be more than enough to keep anyone busy, Gary Rhodes has managed to star in more than a dozen television series and author nearly a dozen cookbooks. Starting in 1988 with Hot Chefs and his newest production Gary Rhodes Autumn Into Winter, his vibrant personality, unique style, and obvious enthusiasm have made him a natural for television. His books, including Rhodes Around Britain, Gary Rhodes: New British Classics, Gary Rhodes: At the Table, and Gary Rhodes Fabulous Food (which won Best Cookbook of the Year at the BBC Good Food Awards) have sold more than a million copies.

Successful chef, restaurateur, and cookbook author Gary Rhodes continues to refine the British classics and display his passion for making British cooking among the best the world has to offer. Believing that food brings us all together and is our best vehicle for communication, he will use his various platforms to put British food on a new plane and take familiar flavors to a new and exciting level.
