Uses

This extremely versatile root is known for its popularity in Asian and Indian cooking. It is used in many forms including grated and ground. Melissa's Organic Ginger is a gnarled and knobby root that has a tan skin and a pale yellow-green to ivory flesh. It is organically grown in accordance with the 1990 California Organic Foods Act. Melissa's Organic label reads: "Melissa's Certified Organic Produce is free of artificial or synthetic fertilizers and full of unforgettable, great tasting flavor. Our farmers use traditional earth-friendly farming methods inspected by a nationally recognized agency to verify organic authenticity. Melissa's Organic Produce, a choice made closer to nature." Organic Ginger is preferred for reasons of taste, health and the environment. Organic Ginger Root is used in baking, confectionery, and the making of certain liqueurs.

Selection, Storage & Handling

When selecting Melissa’s Organic Ginger, choose mature ginger with a smooth skin. Avoid wrinkled skin as it may sometimes indicate the root is dry and somewhat older. Ginger should have a spicy and fresh fragrance. Fresh unpeeled ginger can be refrigerated for up to a week and frozen up to two months if tightly wrapped. To use frozen Organic Ginger, simply slice off a piece of the unthawed root. Place peeled ginger in a jar with a tight fitting lid. Cover with dry sherry and refrigerate up to three weeks. Organic produce should not be stacked with non-organic produce.
