Sprite Melons

Uses

As refreshing as a cool drink, nothing beats a slice of chilled melon on a hot day.  During the summer months, many different varieties of specialty melons are available in the marketplace but there is nothing quite like this one.  Exclusively grown in North Carolina, Sprite Melons are small sized fruits, about 4-5 inches in diameter and averaging just over one pound in weight, making it a convenient snack size. When ripe, they develop a unique characteristic appearance in which the rind turns from creamy white to a mottled yellow. These specialty melons are harvested after their sugar content has developed to its full extent, producing a few brown concentric "sugar rings" at the vine end. The sugar content in Sprite Melons can reach 4% to 6%, higher than most sweet melons. The flesh is white and the texture crisp, much like an apple. The flavor is reminiscent of honeydew and watermelon, with notes of pear. These premium fruits are at their very best simply chilled and served as a naturally delicious dessert all by itself, or for added flavor, try it with a sprinkle of ginger, salt, or a squeeze of lemon or lime. Sprite melons add sweetness to fruit salads or refreshing drinks, such as fruit punches.

Selection, Storage & Handling

Melissa’s Sprite Melons are hand-selected for excellent quality. Choose melons that are firm with a delicate sweet fragrance. Look for fruit heavy for its size, yielding slightly to pressure. Keep cut or ripe fruit in the refrigerator for up to three days. Ripen at room temperature.
