Uses
Traveling by ocean currents, coconuts have established themselves throughout the Indian Ocean, Africa, the Americas, the Caribbean, and numerous islands throughout the world. Originating in Southern Asia, coconuts are a well known delicacy from the coco palm tree. For thousands of years the palm and its fruit has provided food, drink, oil, fuel, housing, furniture and clothing for millions of people in tropical areas throughout the world. Melissa's Quick Crack Coconuts are mature, dark brown fruit with a hard shell which has been scored for easier opening. Inside, the nuts have a fibrous, sweet and creamy meat, about 1/2 an inch thick, covered by a thin edible brown skin. Coconut water makes a nutritious drink and can be used in curry sauces, while Coconut meat can be eaten fresh, dried and used in baking, or pressed (where it is known as copra) and used to make Coconut oil. Grate or shred coconut meat and top a fruit salad, or use in baked goods and desserts.
Selection, Storage & Handling
When selecting Melissa’s Quick Crack Coconuts, choose one that is heavy for its size and sounds full of liquid when shaken. Whole, unopened Coconuts can be stored at room temperature for up to 6 months, depending on the degree of ripeness. Grated fresh Coconut can be refrigerated up to 4 days or frozen up to 6 weeks.
To open, use a rubber mallet along its pre-scored crack. Pour out liquid and reserve. Place the drained Coconut on a baking sheet in a 350º oven for about 15 minutes, or just until the shell begins to crack.
