Uses

Many ancient civilizations considered this fruit to be a symbol of fertility. Sacred and mystical, it is believed to cleanse the soul of envy. A native of the Middle East, it is actually a berry, used by herbalists for its medicinal properties. There are a few varieties of pomegranate, with the only differences being the color of the skin and the sugar content. Often used in ornamental motifs, the pomegranate is about the size and shape of a large orange with a thick, leathery, crimson red skin. Dozens of small seeds are clustered in compartments between a bitter, inedible cream-colored membrane. The deep red juice stains indelibly, making it ideal for dying fabrics and leather. The juice is also very refreshing, especially when chilled. Tip: to collect seeds without staining clothes, submerge pomegranates in a bowl of cold water while peeling. Melissa's also sells pomegranate seeds already removed from the fruit, in an easy-to-store tub.
