Uses
The word walnut derives from Old English literally meaning "foreign nut". Walnuts were called this because they were introduced from Gaul and Italy. Melissa's Walnuts are one of 14 "Super Foods" because of their high omega-3 content. This is a distinction that makes walnuts unique among tree nuts and peanuts. Walnuts are the only nut that contain a significant amount of omega-3. Besides being an antioxidant, these tree nuts contain arginine, which is an amino acid that the body uses to produce nitric oxide -- necessary for keeping blood vessels flexible. Melissa's Organic Walnuts are great as a snack as well as tossed into a salad...or try them in our easy recipe for Baked Apples with Raisins and Walnut Filling.
Selection, Storage & Handling
Look for walnuts that do not have cracks in the shell. Walnuts stored in a cool, dry place will stay fresher longer (they can be stored in the freezer almost indefinitely). If storing opened packages of nuts which have been shelled, be sure to use an airtight container since nuts can absorb odors of other foods.
