Uses
The okra pod resembles an elongated lantern in shape and has soft green coloring. It is characterized by rows of tiny seeds and a slippery texture. Its versatility allows for okra to be added to many different recipes. It is very popular in Creole dishes and is the base ingredient in gumbo. Okra may be steamed, boiled, pickled, sautéed, or deep-fried. Use okra in soups and salads or add it to your menu as a delightful side dish. Avoid cooking okra in pans made of iron, copper or brass, as their reactive properties turns the vegetable black.
Selection, Storage & Handling
Okra from Melissa’s is hand-selected for excellent quality. When buying fresh okra, choose bright colored pods with no signs of spotting or molding. Okra is very sensitive and should stored in a paper bag in the warmest part of the refrigerator for 2-3 days.
