Uses:
Originally cultivated in the Andes where they are still grown today and wild-harvested at 7,500-10,000 feet. They were taken to Florida/Louisiana in the 1700's and then transported by Cajuns to Quebec where they are still cultivated as an annual crop. They are a member of the Solanacaea family, as are the tomatillo and tamarillo, which are close cousins. These flavorful bite-sized fruits have a multitude of names such as Golden Berries, Husk Tomatoes, Ground Cherries, Inca Berries, Aztec Berries, Peruvian Cherries and Poha. Enjoy out of hand as a quick snack or in desserts, jams, jellies, preserves, pie fillings (with or without strawberries), chutneys, sauces, purees, meat glazes, or garnishes for plates and beverages.
